City Wall
The
medieval city wall has been entirely conserved. With its length
of 1,5 kilometers it surrounds the ancient city of Bad Neustadt,
imitating the shape of a heart. The origin of the heart shape
is explained in a romantic legend, according to which the
emperor Charles the Great said to his empress Fastrada, when
he was standing on the Salzburg hill and looking down to the
valley: "As a sign of our love I will construct down
there a heart-shaped town".
A special sight are the city wall's three slim
defense towers situated to the west of the Hohntor. They were
constructed as an additional protection in order to secure
this side that was most exposed to danger, as, in opposition
to the other sides, it was not situated on an important natural
incline.
Here the ancient, primitive loop-holes in the
wall can still be spotted easily.
A walk around the city walls is always recommended,
as it is only this way that you will get fully aware of its
dimensions.
