Church
Stadtpfarrkirche
Another
important landmark of the city is the Church Stadtpfarrkirche
Mariae Himmelfahrt (Assumption). Its proud figure dominates
the market place, and on the northern side it almost nestles
against the city wall.
When entering the church one is surprised and
overwhelmed at the same time. Instead of seeing splendor and
gold, as usual in other catholic churches, the visitant almost
gets the impression of entering a Greek temple because of
the 28 huge Corinthian columns. In line with this Greek ideal
this church can also be considered a great example of Bavarian
classicism.
The
church was constructed in the years 1793 to 1836 - the construction
period lasted over forty years! It is said that even Bavarian
King Ludwig I. has participated in the construction of the
tower's facade. However, the church was constructed on some
older ground-plans which are explained on a board on the outside
of the church.
Another peculiarity of this church and its situation
is the circumstance that, up to now, it has neither been 100%
proved nor denied that the imperial palace "Salce"
of Charles the Great was situated on exactly this place.
